Quick Poll Feedback: tell me about the products

Need some quick feedback from the MV and Irvine teams:  two questions here -- one 1) Who comes up with product requirements,  and 2) Do you have time to think about product features.     Please take the poll and give your vote!

I think that for the question "Who comes up with the ideas for products," I think the answer is "all or some of the above." I don't think it's fair to only be able to click one choice... Maybe the question is better worded, "Who is the PRIMARY source for product ideas".

Also, "Who comes up with product requirements" posed in the blog post and "Who comes up with the ideas for products" from the poll title are indeed two different questions. :)

Nice poll.

Like to see more such polls, one every week or so.

Poll result window showed up clipped with no scrollbar.

Good point josepth... I meant the primary product ideas... Trying to get an idea if people think they have any input or not.

Murali - the poll clipping.. hope I have fixed that now... the result of the poll takes more space than the poll voting, so i have to fiddle with it.

Re: Who comes up with Product Requirements - it's not really a one-person effort in my experience. While the Product Manager is usually the person to intiate an effort and is on the hook coalesce all the ideas into a P.O.R., UI in particular and often dev come up with product refinements and new features, particularly after the 1.0 release.

In Voice Apps team (AIM Phoneline, AOL Call Alert, AOLbyPhone, AOL Voicemail)--a few staff in Mtn View, it's typically the business team, product management, Member Services, brand marketing, and development who contribute the ideas.   This cross-section works well, but also benefits when there is cross-pollination with similar staff from other organizations (Access, Audience).

Regarding 1) I agree with Teleshaw.  It is very often a collective effort with Product Management, Development, UI/Design and the Business to come up with the great ideas and new features around our products.  Take Web Suite for example: developers innovated and came up with cool new features like "Show Maps" and "Blog This!" which weren't necessarily in the original PRD but were low risk to add and cause a big splash whenever we demo the product.  I believe, though, the role of the PM is to bring focus around the product based on these great ideas, or to be open and flexible when new ideas are introduced if they're good for the user and the product.

This is a good question, and you might put up another poll asking this question in particular..."Do you feel you have input on the design of our products?"  But I would ask a slightly different question, "Do you feel that the input you give on our products has made a difference?", and then there could be followup questions, if the answer is no, to find out why.

Here in Irvine, we have 3 current projects that are development driven, 2 that are product driven, and a couple that came from maintenance.  It depends on the project/product.  We have had some influence most definitely on the product driven ones.

In Memory: Leo Pot

Today is one of those days that feels "empty" or "numb".    I attended a funeral for Leo Pot, who died on July 4th from Cancer.     Such a nice man, very successful with his businesses, and a great family.  Funny, sharp, witty.   He shared a glass of wine or two with me, and gave me thoughts on life after leaving my last job.    More important, he has a wonderful family.    It's hard seeing his 3 young daughters at the funeral, each dealing with grief.  Live each day to the fullest.  Make sure you get the most out of what you do, and spend time with people you care about. Rest in peace, Leo.   "On July 4, 2008 Leonardus Leo Josephus Pot, loving father and doting husband, left his earthly existence peacefully, at home, in the company of his family. Born in the fall of 1956 in Oegstgeest, The Netherlands to Martin and Joanne Pot, he would go on to complete a Bachelor's deg...

AOLers : Don't let people say silly things about your company

Don't let people say silly things about your company Yes I mean it. Your company. I read the blogosphere,  and often see articles on some feature or product that has been launched.   Then I follow the comments.   You get the normal AOL bashing,  some people who like it, some people who bash and have never used the product being reviewed.  All the normal stuff. But Frank Gruber set an example for me last year.  When he spots these comments, he follows up with a comment and (if possible) contacts the person who wrote the it. Often the comments don't have contact info or use real names.  But if they do, Frank will email them as follow up.  And the response is normally good.      If Frank can do it (as busy as he is), so can we all do it. The latest blog that struck me was this article " Yes, People Still Use AOL " on Silicon Alley Insider.  The first comment was negative, the third was negative.   ...

Pizza - with egg on it? A Paris delight!

Tonight at a late night snack after lots of walking, pizza... And boy did it taste good. I have never had pizza with egg on it, until in Paris. But though it looked a bit odd, it tasted yummy. What's on your pizza? Tags: pizza , paris , france
