AOL Silicon Valley : Fitness Center

Please provide feedback on the Fitness Center.  I know HP is informing you that the Fitness Center will be closing. However, they have not officially notified AOL.

Here are 3 questions, that I need your feedback on. Feel free to leave a comment on the blog if you have comments too.

I will check on Friday April 27 for results.. Thanks!

I regularly use the fitness center. My preference (as expressed in my vote) is for an on-site center, but returning to having a gym stipend as an alternative would be appreciated if an on-site center did not prove practical.

Thank You,
Carles

I think second stipend.

Why ?

1) one may use that $ to attend a gym near the office (such as club of mountain view, 1/4 mile from work and a very good facility).

2) One may choose to use a gym near their home to be able to go on weekends ...

3) People who are not working yet get a motivation to go join a gym of their choice .. or try a new sport if a stipend was provided ...

4) freedom of choice ....

(I second the stipend)

I would like access both to cardio equipment and weights.

Although I voted for an onsite facility, I'm persuaded by Junaid's stipend option and I think that would be my top choice now, assuming the stipend could be used anywhere.

I am a regular user of the gym. If an on-site fitness center could be provided which is at par with the current one (machines, facilities, classes etc.), then I am all for it. But if our option is to get a mini-gym with few machines, and the lone shower downstairs, then I would prefer the stipend option.

i use both weights and cardio machines regularly, so they are equally important to me.

For the "most important" question, I selected classes, but the classes and machines are equally important to me.  I prefer the stipend to having a lesser facility with no classes in bldg 12.  Is there an option to take back ownership of the existing gym in building 22?  Thanks for the survey and for using Journals and Polls!

Not knowing when our lease on Building 22 is up, I would say that the perferred option would be to hire back Club One for the time being until our lease in 22 is up or we figure out another option. Possibly move them into the 1st floor of 12 or 14. Possibly buy back the equipment from Club One if they prove to be too expensive. There are other companies in the area that might be willing to pay to use the work out facility. If we have a work out facility on site it has to be all or nothing. It can't be a tread mill and a couple of weights it needs to be comparable to what is currently available to us. That's why so many employees are using it. That, the proximatey, and its not overcrowded and dirty like facilities available to the public. If that is not feasible, Symmantec or other local companies might be willing to allow us to pay a fee for their facilities. I believe that having a stipend is not the way to go. First of all the proximatey, there is the one gym on Middlefield that's the closest and even that is too far. Employees find it beneficial to be able to work out in the work day to split the day up. If we don't have a gym in this or an adjacent building, employees will become unhappy with the inability to go workout. Even for those who actually don't have to drive 20 miles to a work out facility who has time after work at 10pm to go work out. If we were able to move the work out facility into this building, that would show that this company is still willing to support a Mtn View campus and willing to do something to make its employees happy at work. Calculating the numbers if everyone on campus including contractors (b/c they also use the gym) were to get a stipend for $50 a month (some maybe higher or lower) the yearly pay out for AOL would be approx $120k. It may take a while to recover the costs if we move the facilities to 12 but there has been lot more spent on remodeling the building. What is the price to pay in keeping our work force healthy and fit?

I third Junaid's vote for the stipend for exactly the reasons he mentioned.  It may not be practical for us to have a gym at the same level as the current one.  Why not give folks the choice to pick what they want?

In Memory: Leo Pot

Today is one of those days that feels "empty" or "numb".    I attended a funeral for Leo Pot, who died on July 4th from Cancer.     Such a nice man, very successful with his businesses, and a great family.  Funny, sharp, witty.   He shared a glass of wine or two with me, and gave me thoughts on life after leaving my last job.    More important, he has a wonderful family.    It's hard seeing his 3 young daughters at the funeral, each dealing with grief.  Live each day to the fullest.  Make sure you get the most out of what you do, and spend time with people you care about. Rest in peace, Leo.   "On July 4, 2008 Leonardus Leo Josephus Pot, loving father and doting husband, left his earthly existence peacefully, at home, in the company of his family. Born in the fall of 1956 in Oegstgeest, The Netherlands to Martin and Joanne Pot, he would go on to complete a Bachelor's deg...

AOLers : Don't let people say silly things about your company

Don't let people say silly things about your company Yes I mean it. Your company. I read the blogosphere,  and often see articles on some feature or product that has been launched.   Then I follow the comments.   You get the normal AOL bashing,  some people who like it, some people who bash and have never used the product being reviewed.  All the normal stuff. But Frank Gruber set an example for me last year.  When he spots these comments, he follows up with a comment and (if possible) contacts the person who wrote the it. Often the comments don't have contact info or use real names.  But if they do, Frank will email them as follow up.  And the response is normally good.      If Frank can do it (as busy as he is), so can we all do it. The latest blog that struck me was this article " Yes, People Still Use AOL " on Silicon Alley Insider.  The first comment was negative, the third was negative.   ...

Pizza - with egg on it? A Paris delight!

Tonight at a late night snack after lots of walking, pizza... And boy did it taste good. I have never had pizza with egg on it, until in Paris. But though it looked a bit odd, it tasted yummy. What's on your pizza? Tags: pizza , paris , france
