Wanted: Ideas on Fun things for our office

I said at the all hands that I want to improve the "office" environment.  I'd like to get your ideas on this - so please send them or add to this blog.   I've got some, but not much yet. Here is a list of ideas from a recent meeting with the mv leadership team.

Please let me know!   No idea is bad.

Plasma displays in local areas (like in the lobby)

Top of the list – can we reconfigure the cubes larger.  Bullpens?

Decorating contests (like the old days of bean bag chairs, soda can bridges and indoor putting greens)

Ergonomic chairs

Music in the hallways, stairwells, bathrooms.  Can people go to a site to put music on a playlist that will be added to the queue

Do we want a “green” campus

Used book area swap.  Audio book swap for the commuters

Amateur photography competition and photo area.  Place to put up photos for public viewing.  Vacation photos

Upgrade the brand of coffee used in the kitchens

Sandwich shop

Move everyone closer

Local Starbucks

Better Seating

Ballpens

No ballpens

Free soda

paint the walls

Here's something similar to the fish tank which I think people would enjoy.

http://www.hypnocube.com/

Try the demo videos.  You can get it in assembled or kit form (if the hardware guys feel like assembling it).  This might not work since it has more impact in a darker environment but it is impressive.

It reminds me of an electronic replacement for a lava lamp (this could be my hippie days starting to come back).

Hire or move some Corp Comm people out here who can market what we do.

I miss the community events...I'd like to do an Outward Bound, Save the Bay, or Habitat for Humanity.

And for those of us who don't drink coffee...free OJ.

Continued usage of the gym(Please!!!)
A lot of us make use of it, they have free yoga/kickboxing/pilates classes, & a wide range of equipments..Plus, it is not crowded like 24 hr fitness..Saves time bcoz it is just across the street.

Allow each team to customize their work area based on a theme they choose. Hopefully people will choose cool themes. The journals corner can be setup with a village theme or a ocean theme or a Hawaii theme.  This way each section of the building will look different and create a different feeling when you roam through different parts of the building...there should be some prize too for being creative..

No bullpens, please.

Lunchtime barbeques.  Ice cream socials.

How about larger bonus; rather than spending money on "fun things for our office".  :)

several massage therapists strategically placed (out in the open near the cubes) that have massage chairs and can give 10-15-30 minute massages (for a small fee if necessary :) )

Another vote for continued use of the gym. The location is great, and the facilities (equipment, classes, showers, towel service etc.) are excellent. I would hate to lose it :(

Let's start small: How about getting them to put soda in the machines once in a while (you fellow Diet Coke drinkers probably know what I'm talking about).

Bigger cubes. I need more desk space for more machines since we move to open platforms. If 10x10 is not possible, how about 8x8? Thanks!

In Memory: Leo Pot

Today is one of those days that feels "empty" or "numb".    I attended a funeral for Leo Pot, who died on July 4th from Cancer.     Such a nice man, very successful with his businesses, and a great family.  Funny, sharp, witty.   He shared a glass of wine or two with me, and gave me thoughts on life after leaving my last job.    More important, he has a wonderful family.    It's hard seeing his 3 young daughters at the funeral, each dealing with grief.  Live each day to the fullest.  Make sure you get the most out of what you do, and spend time with people you care about. Rest in peace, Leo.   "On July 4, 2008 Leonardus Leo Josephus Pot, loving father and doting husband, left his earthly existence peacefully, at home, in the company of his family. Born in the fall of 1956 in Oegstgeest, The Netherlands to Martin and Joanne Pot, he would go on to complete a Bachelor's deg...

AOLers : Don't let people say silly things about your company

Don't let people say silly things about your company Yes I mean it. Your company. I read the blogosphere,  and often see articles on some feature or product that has been launched.   Then I follow the comments.   You get the normal AOL bashing,  some people who like it, some people who bash and have never used the product being reviewed.  All the normal stuff. But Frank Gruber set an example for me last year.  When he spots these comments, he follows up with a comment and (if possible) contacts the person who wrote the it. Often the comments don't have contact info or use real names.  But if they do, Frank will email them as follow up.  And the response is normally good.      If Frank can do it (as busy as he is), so can we all do it. The latest blog that struck me was this article " Yes, People Still Use AOL " on Silicon Alley Insider.  The first comment was negative, the third was negative.   ...

Pizza - with egg on it? A Paris delight!

Tonight at a late night snack after lots of walking, pizza... And boy did it taste good. I have never had pizza with egg on it, until in Paris. But though it looked a bit odd, it tasted yummy. What's on your pizza? Tags: pizza , paris , france
